My God is not…

Blogs and Podcast with David Leo Schultz

My God is not the god of those who would rather have a White Rambo as their savior vs a Brown Rabbi.

My God is not the god who is a pawn to promote a political party.

My God doesn’t have VIP room for only the rich and famous, the popularly pious, or the decorated moral veterans…My God breaks all your rules, all your social climbing ladders…

My God cares not for your popularity contests, or your lists of who’s hot and who’s not, who’s in or who’s out…

My God is the bouncer at the party who lets everybody in…

Everyone.

My God accepts all, loves all, and invites you to experience the joy, delight, and freedom of unconditional love.

My God loves you whether you are straight or gay, rich or poor, black or white, Democrat or republican…

My God is no more a man than she is a woman. My God won’t be contained by your small minded metaphors.

My God is bigger than your biggest idea of big.

How much correct information, moral superiority, satisfying repentance, sanctifying sincerity, faithful faith, believing beliefs would finally be enough to reach the highest heaven in the mountaintops of God’s Goodness?

Would any amount be enough?

What measure would it take? The minute you say you…

Need to have…you immediately have to ask…

How much?

If I have to believe..

How much belief…

If I have to have faith…

How much faith….

Good works…

How many…

Sincerity…

How sincere…?

Pure motives…?

How pure…?

Repentance…?

How perfect a repentant?

The minute we put up a rope to the nightclub of God’s grace…He knocks it down….

With the echoing words of Christ screaming through Jesus on the cross screaming “It is Finished.”

We are the cancel culture- and we all should be cancelled.

We all fall short.

Till the end of time we will be saying to each other…

“You must be this tall to ride this ride.”

But God isn’t that petty or boring.

God disrupts and destroys any notion of classism, sexism, and racism….

By saying we are all the same- broken and beautiful- loveable losers and wild weirdos who have an incredible capacity for good and are too often distracted with measuring, excluding, knowing, defending, pointing fingers, hating, judging, blameshifting, shaming…and whatever we have to do…to put others below us…

Let’s not play that game. Let’s not put each other down or on pedestals.

Let’s lift up the downtrodden and humble the prideful with one word: grace.

The worst of the worst of the worst of the worst of us: someone like me.

I’m in. And if I’m in- you’re in.

And nothing will keep you out, except your own illusions…thinking you’re too bad to be out or too good to need to be let in.

God does not discriminate.

He loves all, includes all, accepts all.

This my friends is good news.

Good News = Gospel

You are deeply and forever loved and nothing will separate you from the love of God – not even death.

Yesterday, Tomorrow, and today- the invitation remains the same…

God is the door (man/woman) at his/her own party…and they invite you in…

Whether you are gay or straight, black or white, republican or democrat, prostitution or pastor, celebrity or port-a-pottie cleaner…

God says you’re welcome here.

The door to heaven…which isn’t a place as much as it is a Divine Reality where Creator and Creation dance till the break of dawn…

And this is why Jesus was often so harsh and rude to the religious…

Because the poor, the sinner, the lowly – run and do cartwheels into the hands of God…”Free Food!” They y’all as they run in…you don’t have to ask them twice…

But the rich?

The celebrities?

The self Righteous?

The ______?

These groups are alive and well…and they are invited….but have one reason or another that they don’t want to go…

Jesus in the gospels gives us two primary reasons (at least two)…of why these groups won’t come to the party.

  1. It’s not FAIR that the others got in.
  2. The OTHERS.

If they are at the party…I won’t be caught dead there…

And so they live in their own hell that they call heaven. And it’s a heaven where everyone votes the same way they do, where they all have the same skin color, drive the same cars, have the same haircuts….

Don’t be them. Get a better heaven.

A bigger heaven.

A real heaven…

Where everyone is welcome…

…even you…

The Divine Doorman has knocked down the rope…

And the party has begun…and will continue to rage…and won’t stop until you get here…

So…what are you waiting for?

Come on in..
